An automatic ball launcher can give an energetic dog a great outlet for play, but most dogs need a little help to understand how it works. Here's a simple, patient approach that works for many dogs.
1. Introduce the launcher calmly
Set the launcher on the floor, switched off, and let your dog sniff and explore it. Reward calm curiosity with praise or a small treat. Some dogs are unsure of new objects, so give them time.
2. Let them hear it before it throws
Turn it on at the shortest distance setting and drop a ball in yourself. Stand beside your dog, stay relaxed, and praise them when the ball comes out. If your dog seems nervous, pause and try again later.
3. Play fetch together first
For the first few sessions, you load the ball and let your dog chase it. When they bring it back, take the ball, praise them, and drop it into the launcher right in front of them so they see where the ball goes.
