Step by step
- Get your pet comfortable. Handle their paws gently for a few seconds at a time over several days, rewarding them each time.
- Introduce the trimmer. Switch it on near your pet without touching them so they get used to the sound. Reward calm behavior.
- Trim only the fur that sticks out. Spread the pads gently and trim the fur level with the pads. Don't dig deep between the pads or trim the pads themselves.
- Keep it short. Do one or two paws per session if your pet gets restless. There's no need to finish in one go.
- Reward and check. Finish with a treat, and take the chance to check pads for cuts, cracks or anything stuck.
When to stop and ask for help
If your pet becomes very stressed, or you notice redness, swelling or a wound on the pads, stop and ask your veterinarian or a professional groomer for advice.
Paw fur vs nails
A paw trimmer is for fur, not nails. For nails, use a proper pet nail clipper and trim only the tip, avoiding the quick.
